Lorie Freeman Appointed to ISSA Control Commission

Director of the Virgin Islands Social Security Board (SSB), Lorie Freeman, has been appointed to the Control Commission of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), following elections at the World Social Security Forum (WSSF).

The WSSF, which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 29 September to 3 October 2025, gathered over 2,000 participants from more than 130 countries. Attendees gathered to discuss how social protection systems can adapt to demographic shifts, labour market changes, climate risks and digital transformation.

Freeman was elected to serve as Titular Auditor of the ISSA’s Control Commission. Her nomination and subsequent appointment signal the Social Security Board’s commitment to contributing to the global standards of social protection. In her role, Freeman will supervise the financial affairs of the Association, ensuring compliance with ISSA regulations and its code of transparency.

When asked to reflect on her appointment, Director Freeman said: “I am honoured to serve in this capacity. This role presents a valuable opportunity to contribute to global dialogue, with the perspective and experience of the region. I intend to approach the work with diligence, and I look forward to the collaborative impact this experience will offer.” Freeman continued her remarks by thanking her Caribbean colleagues who advocated for her nomination and also to the ISSA Council for their confidence and trust.

Freeman was among the 27-member delegation from the Caribbean at the World Forum. Delegates from the region gathered to discuss the strategic expansion of social protection coverage and assert a collective commitment to reform and innovation. Such participation enables leaders to share regional insights and strengthen their own systems through international cooperation.

Regarding the WSSF, Chairman of the Board, Mr. Glenroy Forbes stated: “Attending events like the World Forum is valuable for small jurisdictions like ours. They provide access to global expertise, foster strategic partnerships, and allow us to contribute meaningfully to the evolution of social protection systems. I recognise Ms. Freeman’s appointment as a proud moment for the Virgin Islands and an integral step to advancing collaboration and innovation.”

In addition to Freeman’s election, the Social Security Board earned a Certificate of Merit from ISSA for its participation in the inaugural International Social Security Video Festival. The Board’s submission celebrated the public education efforts of the 2024 ‘Secure Your Tomorrow’ Campaign. Representing the SSB at the World Forum were Ms. Lorie Freeman, Director of the SSB; Ms. Tasha Bertie, Permanent Secretary to the Minister of Health and Ms. Maya Barry, member of the Board of Directors.

The Social Security Board remains committed to building a resilient and inclusive social protection system. We applaud Director Freeman on her appointment and commend her leadership as she continues to uphold the highest standards both locally and abroad.
